Geohazards Management Division

As a community services, the Geohazards Management Division is responsible for monitoring and assessment of geological hazards, including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides and mass erosion events in PNG (and its neighboring countries). Where possible, early warning of the effects of these hazards and advice on mitigation will be provided to relevant authorities and communities. Through applied research the Division aims to improve the capabilities to monitor, assess and where possible predict geological hazards in the PNG region. The Division also aims to provide information and advice to local communities and appropriate authorities on the nature and dangers of geological hazards.

Three functional groups exist within this division. These are the Port Moresby Geophysical Observatory (PMGO), Rabaul Volcanological Observatory (RVO) and the Engineering Geology (EG) based in Port Moresby.
